The morsum sopel split from its ancestor, the morsus sopor. It has grown plates on its sides for better protection against predators. The plates can also get very hot if anything gets too close. It will attach itself to other passing by creatures or push itself inside the body of the larger creature. Then after a certain period of time it will force itself out of the body. The only way for it to reproduce is by splitting itself in two.
