The phantom filtersquid split from its ancestor the marine filtersquid. It has returned to the deep ocean where it feeds on microscopic plankton. Like its ancestors it can change colors to avoid predators. However in the deeper zones it is much too dark for predators to even see them. They have developed a dorsal and ventral fin to help stabilize its body as it flows through the water.
They normally swim slowly through the water to conserve energy. However if a predator is detected it will quickly dart away with its jets. They each full moon they will come up to the twilight zone to mate and lay their eggs directly into the water.
