The sticky cube-jaw replaced its ancestor, the sticky cube-trap, by being able to catch bigger prey than it could. The "jaws" of the cube-jaw can be used to drag itself to new locations in times of need. The organism has developed to produce more of the sweet smelling, green liquid that can also be used to coat wingworm feathers and stop them from getting away from its sticky grasp.
