The braid root has split from its ancestor, the tangle root. While it still floats on top of the water like its ancestor, its form has changed. The braid root’s center has grown wider than the tangle root, giving it a large area to photosynthesize. To balance the top, the leaves have grown longer and formed a large cord. Although this cord can photosynthesize to some degree, it now acts more as a root, drawing nutrients and water into the plant.
