The ramulcrusta split from its ancestor. They now gather on the beaches and inland in huge swarms, visible to the naked eye as large orangey-green slime deposits . They have kept the green pigments that allow them to photosynthesize, but the orange pigment comes from the sulfur seeping into them from the sand.
