The ancestor of the '''shaillor''', the [[shellear]], migrated to another area in search of food. Its previous habitat, had too much competition over [[marbleflora]] for it to compete in, and thus went extinct in [[Colddigger Polar Coast]]. However when the shellears arrived in their new environment, they thrived: the only other fauna there was the [[Fiesta Leafshell|fiesta leafshell]], which didn't eat marbleflora. Shaillors have a commensal relationship with fiesta leafshells: they will eat fiesta leafshell "dung" (more like owl pellets, as in most plents) and will even scavenge dead fiesta leafshells.

Shaillors don't go onto land anymore. However, if beached by a storm or strong currents, they are usually able to survive long enough to get back into the water. They fill their shells with air now, rather than water. This allows them to regulate buoyancy, something like a paper nautilus. (Shaillors even a shell membrane that is superficially similar to the paper nautilus.) This adaptation allows them to migrate vertically in water column, so they occupy both a pelagic and benthic niche. More specifically, they live 0-150 meters below sea level.
