Ancestor:Descendants:

The towerballs split from its ancestor. Since it was not entirely aquatic, some of the reefballs could spread onto the lands of Wright. With few predators to eat it, the towerballs grew to a tremendous size. In order to deal with competition for sunlight and other nutrients with other plants, the towerballs have developed roots that have evolved the ability to digest and absorb microbes. During times when the sun is shining most, it mainly uses photosynthesis, but if there is little sunlight, it will depend upon microbes for nutrients.

Much like its ancestor, it has an internal "skeleton" that remains after death; these "skeletons" are often used for shelter by all sorts of organisms.
