The wave gigarystal split from its ancestor. Due to competition in the river some gigarystals were pushed out into the empty riparian of the river. The species' high reproductive rate allowed it to quickly adopt a terrestrial lifestyle and thrived there, even spreading to the relatively empty alpine biome.
They've shrunk in size to conserve energy. The upper part of the crystal is dark to absorb heat which is channeled into the roots, a necessary adaptation for the colder areas they inhabit. Like their ancestor they grow extremely fast, expelling spores off their sides every month. Individuals take 1 week to grow and live for 5 years.
