The archer gilltail split from its ancestor, the surge gilltail. It has moved in the Bone Salt Bog where it hunts tonboswarmers. It no longer leaps out of the water to get prey but conserves energy by waiting for prey to come it it. Once a tonboswarmer flies by it will spit out water from its mouth and knock it into the water. Its fins are now more paddle shaped for life in the salt bog. Juvenile archer gilltails are herbivorous and eat small marine flora like snotballs and marble flora. Once the reach adolescence they switch to a completely carnivorous lifestyle. Their golden coloration is to blend in with the golden mud of the Darwin region.
