The competition in the deep zone was too great for filter-feeding to be a successful strategy so the deepworms gradually became better adapted to being predators. their bodies elongated for speed and their tail fin extended. They developed a lens over their eye-hollow to allow for better vision and also developed a tough, beak-like inner mouth. They reproduce sexually and possess a luminous crest to attract mates.
