The bent fungibane replaced its ancestor, the tall fungibane. While its ancestor produced poison that literally melted anything with chitin in its body, the bent fungibane does not. It took extra effort to produce the chemical, and eventually natural selection bred for its loss, as there are no chitin flora living in its biomes anymore. It now bends over and rests on its stalk, to better support its longer shape and its new hanging "leaves" which evolved from its ancestors spikes, which it did not need for protection because nothing predated on it. To get rid of excess salt, instead of just letting it build up on its spore chamber, it will actually spray it out of its body, like it does its spores.
