The brightsphere split from its ancestor, the glassphere, when many colonies adapted to live in deeper waters at night. They function very similarly to their ancestors, although there are several bioluminescent cells in the center, which brighten up significantly when they are approached. They use this as a defense mechanism, though the intensity of this bioluminescence is quite high, and can still be seen in Mason's deep ocean regions at night, as a soft glow.
