The chaococoon has replaced its ancestor, the rustorb and spread around the island. It is twice the size of its ancestor and can now be seen with the naked eye. Like its ancestor it absorbs iron oxide giving it its reddish color. Unlike its ancestor, the chaococoon concentrates its iron oxide, making it poisonous to most creatures. This has had the interesting effect of no iron oxide reaching the top of the plant, as such the top is purple like its distant ancestor the stickyball.
During months of extreme warmth, the rustorb populations will boom, often coloring the water and beaches purplish red. These blooms are especially spectacular in the southern reaches of the island and some summers they get so large that the blooms are visible from space.
