Ancestor:Descendants:

The crastrum is another split of of the successful crescoquin scindestus. The biggest difference between the crastrum and its ancestor is that the photosynthetic parts now are much softer, they now bend after the white part. This allows the crastrum to have its star/ball shape, which gives it much photosynthetic surface, as well as making it more maneuverable. The crastrum can move its "arms" in and out, resulting in a swimming like movement, something that compensates for the lost defense system. The ball shape is also possible since when the photosynthetic parts aren't as hard they weight less, so crastrum doesn't need as big white part to support the weight, the white part can when it is as small as possible fit in the ball shape, making it quite defended even though it isn't as hard anymore.
