Fuzzkerns developed from talfuzzes farmed by helmethead uksips. They live close to the surface where they can receive sunlight. This is either a protected ditch or below holes to the surface made by some burrowing fauna. Due to the limited sunlight available, it has increased the number of secondary-pigment receptacles ("purple chlorophyll b") to allow it to capture whatever wavelengths filter through.

Fuzzkerns' seeds (not shown to scale) are very high in iron. The seed is contained in a fleshy, striped hull, like an elaiosome that fully covers a seed. The helmethead uksips eat the fleshy hull and transfer the seed to a garden of detritivore microbes. There, hidestriders liquefy the floury insides of the seeds. The spores, contained within, stick to the hidestrider's snout. The hidestrider can then transfer the spores to other places, where they can germinate.
