The gem shrub evolved from the gem orb, and has replaced it in Nuke Chaparral. The gem shrub arose due to a lack of competition in the area since the ice comet. They are basically the same as their ancestors, but are larger and have a darker pigment, both adapted to increase the energy received from photosynthesis.
