The grasseater scuttlecrab became the first large herbivore on the Irinya Islands. It branched from the leatherback scuttlecrab. Key developments are the increase in size and the movement of its two smaller eyes to the sides of its head. These developments make it much harder for the lizardworm to attack it. It eats all the grasses found on the islands and will even eat beach puffs if it finds them. The grasseater scuttlecrab has retained its symbiosis with the beach puffs.
