The Hairy Flashkelp is the much larger descendant of the Amphibious Flashkelp, and prefers to grow in turbulent, warm, shallow waters. It grows outward from the center in giant fans with the help of its great vascular system, producing thick almost tubular leaves. Hairy whisps of filament bud from the tips of these leaves. As it grows, the older leaves are pushed to the outside of the fan and shrivel, while that leaves filaments "grow" longer as a result. The plants absorb red light with their green chloroplasts and reproduce via binary fission. They also produce a soft pulsing inner glow when disturbed, and often shimmer in the rolling waves. When threatened, they emit a stunning amount of light which triggers nearby plants to do the same, startling predators that have vision. |
