The heplumnia split from its ancestor and adapted to the cold environment. Its seven pseudopods are protected by a thick shell partially constituted by iron, provenient from the iron rich soils of the Ittiz region. The iron was incorporate to its diet, being used to strengthen its shell. Unlike its ancestor, it has no flagella, but will swim to the light source using the several rows of cilia that encircle it.
