The island colonialball replaced its ancestor, the pioneer colonialball. With their immense range and fast reproduction, it was only a matter of time before the colonialballs began to adapt to better rule the seas. The island colonialball is an incredible organism, found almost everywhere in Sagan 4's oceans. Although an individual ball is only 8 cm wide, the form immense raft-like structures, some almost reaching the size of small islands. As they continually bud off new globes, some remain on the main structure and help it grow even larger while some float off to start new colonies. Each individual globe grows roots, but as time progresses the roots of the colonialballs fuse together so that entire sections of the rafts share the same nutrients. This keeps all sections from getting too much or too little. The island-rafts are so large that small flying fauna (and amphibious fauna) often build nests on them. In some areas, very small, simple ecosystems can even be built on them.
