The midnight filtersquid split from its ancestor, the phantom filtersquid. It has moved to the midnight zone, where detritus/dead photosynthetic microbes are more abundant. It has gained bioluminescent patterning and webbing between its tentacles for better control. It travels to the twilight zone extremely rarely and briefly to lay eggs in the water like its ancestor. Unlike its ancestor, the midnight filtersquid cannot change color because it has lost pigmentation, appearing light grey. They spend most of their time moving slowly and filter-feeding, but when frightened it will dart away quickly using its jet, much like its ancestor. It has undergone deep-sea gigantism, tripling in size.
