Following the arrival of the stickylicker, the stickyballs stood no chance in the battle for survival. Their extremely fast reproduction method enabled them to adjust to the new threat. They evolved microscopic "spears" on the edges of their "skin", so that when the stickylicker's saliva melts their stickiness, these spears will either help them stay stuck to the surface, or hurt the stickylicker's mouth and throat. It is now called the Painballs, for the pain they give when losing their stickiness.
The Painballs, thanks to this new adaptation, quickly replaced the stickyballs in Hydro Savanna and Hydro Scrub, because the stickylicker fear them and their blue color. This color became a symbol for danger, and any animal with the Painball's blueish color will be regarded as leprous by its own species and those who feed upon it. This, unfortunately, makes the Painball less dispersible than its ancestor, though no less successful.
