Ancestor:Descendants:

A descendant of the Dragon Marephasmoids, this species left the sunlit waters above and ventured down into the deepest depths of the sea, farther than light itself dare travel. There, it feasts on the bodies of those who fall in the great battle of survival, a beautiful but deadly vulture of the sea.

The Phantom Lily is a species that has experienced Abyssal Gigantism, adults reaching a length of 40 centimeters, ten times larger than their relatives who frequent lighter waters. They have developed bioluminescence on every part of their bodies, a warning for predators to keep their distance from these deadly beauties of the deep, all of whom carry potent venom and poisonous flesh.

In addition to their increase in length, their main body has grown much more spread out, and their lower set of fins now sits a fair distance away from their head. The chemoreceptive nubs around their ancestor's mouths have also elongated into long pseudotentacles, allowing them to more accurately sense falling marine snow as they drift through the dark ocean waters.

When it comes time to mate, groups of Phantom Lilies will rise up to the surface in the dark of night, feeding upon the blooms of plankton. While most surface animals will tend to stay away from the strangely shaped and unfamiliar being that is the Phantom Lily, this creature is not unprepared for those who fail to do so. Even if the would-be predators do not receive the glowing memo of this creature's toxicity, the stinging tentacles on the tails of their ancestors have hardened into spines, allowing it to be used to whip and scratch at aggressors.

Once any threats are dealt with, the Phantom Lilies will begin to feed. During this feeding time, they will mate and cast their eggs out into the waters in clumps, and then leave them there as they creep back into the depths of the sea to avoid the rays of the sun. These eggs will slowly sink deeper and deeper into the ocean, following their parents back down into the sunless depths of the world. To ensure the survival of most of these offspring, the eggs are highly toxic and glow with the same bright colors as the rest of their species.
