Savanna Shards split from their ancestor, the savanna crystal. The only real difference between this crystal and it's ancestor, is that the body collapsed in on the core, creating thin dense structures. Because of this other vegetation nearby couldn't grow without getting puntured. As a result of this "stabbing", the body of the crystals widened and the shape was more spread out.
