The spiral plern split from its ancestor. With the bullying fernt out-competing the tower fernplent, some of the fernplents evolved to fight back. When first growing, instead of the branches growing straight upwards, the all simply head towards light. As the direction the light comes from often changes in the rainforest, the branches will always be growing in different directions. This produces the spiral formation seen in the picture. The plern is therefore able to sneak past the bullying fernt to get to the sunlight. The plern has also evolved a small trunk enabling it to grow in the most cramped conditions and has spread to the temperate forest.
