The stacked gem orb split from its ancestor and grew in size. This flora is now colonial, a spore on top of the parent flora grows without being released. This child flora takes root in its mother now spongy core where it absorbs nutrients and water brought up from the ground. As the stack gets taller the lower flora will become wider to support the weight. This process can go on forever resulting in rather tall stacks, but normally the stack will topple, causing a mass release of spores all at once, these spores don't go very far since they were released near the ground and so pocket forests of stacked gem orbs can be found scattered across the land.
