Tepoguin grow multiple plume-like "branches" from a tough, pebble-like base. They can lay dormant for months, doing so whenever covered by dirt or snow. Their dormancy response is dependent on light intensity, not temperature. If temperatures are very cold but the light is intense, its dormancy response will not activate, and it may die.

Tepoguin can live on thin, rocky soil. This is often soil made by strangleroots breaking down rocks. The two species coexist in the same environments, with the exception of Vivus Tundra. Populations of tepoguin in the Vivus Tundra are sparse and limited in number.

As they are detritivores, they can live even with minimal sunlight when growing on a substrate of decaying matter. They are often found growing among the wooden bones of dead rainbow phlocks.
