Ancestor:Descendants:

The ambush sauceback has split from the falsequill sauceback. It now has developed an amphibious lifestyle, and will sit and wait at the water's edge waiting for creatures to come and drink. When they start to drink they will ambush them and pull them into the water. They not only have gotten slightly larger since they spend most of their time in the water but have a streamlined shape.

Their tail spike is now flat and used to help push itself up in the water when ambushing as well as propulsion when moving in the water. The legs have grown smaller and now have webbing between the toes. These not only help in swimming but help it dig in the mud to help hide itself. the spikes have all since gone away to help hide it as well as streamline it. Its coloring is now brown to blend in with the mud.

They have an extended range because the bone and huggs rivers merge in huggs lake. This allows it to travel farther south than if they had just lived in bone river. They will lay their eggs in the muddy shores, and when they hatch they must defend for themselves. It is not uncommon for adult ambush saucebacks to prey upon younger ones, but they are also not above scavenging for food and will be opportunistic if they find a dead creature already in the waters or on shore. However they prefer to spend time in the water since they are very slow on land.

They still breathe air and their microlungs have moved to the end of the tail. It will lift up its tail like a snorkel to breathe and then will bring it back down without having to leave the water. While blind it has a keen sense of smell and can find rotting food from miles away. Their ears can hear underwater fairly well and, along with touch, can sense when a creature is drinking or struggling in the water; even if it had eyes they would be useless in the very muddy waters. In fact, the fact that it's so muddy means it can sit right at the water edge in shallow water and still not be seen.
