The articulated thornback has split from its ancestor. Although slightly smaller it specializes in the larger flora of the island and only occasional competes with related species. The thorns on its back are now articulated at the base, and can be flapped slightly up and down. This plays a major role in courtship during the mating season and in communication in general the rest of the year. while significant enough to place it in a separate genus this is one of the few deviations from the thornback, and the only one of any note apart from the dietary changes.
