Ancestor:Descendants:

The cherfoi split from its ancestor and adapted for a subterrestrial life. It keeps it's flaps curled over its back and poorly developed eyes most of the time to absorb the nutrients in the sand and mud it lives in. Only when it can't find enough nutrients in the substrate, it will emerge from the ground, unfold it's flaps and swim to another spot several meters away; it's not an endurance swimmer. Cherfois use mainly it's sense of smell and taste for orientation, both inside and above the ground. In some cases, they gather in massive amount underneath decaying carcasses, but rarely get inside the carcass itself. Because of its more cryptic life, the cherfoi reduced it's production of bitter chemicals to conserve the energy for other processes, but kept the spotted pattern to imitate it's foul-tasting ancestor.
