The cliff larand replaced its ancestor, the polar larand. It could not survive well on the exposed glacier where there were very little nutrients. So it now gathers on the ice glacial sea cliffs where the nutrients from the ocean can splash onto the ice.
Its stalks now produce spores inside the photosynthetic parts. During the warmer month they photosynthesize. But once it starts getting colder they produce spores and then die. These spores soon freeze in the ice or float around in the polar sea until the warmer months return. Then they get deposited on the glacial sea cliffs or melt out of the ice and grow again.
