Ancestor:Descendants:

The cluster crastrum replaced its ancestor. It evolved due to a mutation that occurred when it was fragmentating. The fragmented "stripe" was stuck on its parent crastrum. When both the parent crastrum and the fragment started evolving into full sausage crastrums they were now stuck together. This was favored by nature due to that when there is sun they are able to gather more sunlight in a short time, and can store more energy. They are also more protected from filter-feeders when they are connected. The cluster crastrums lines longer then 35 cm were also safe from the dangerous maelstrom ghark, so growing longer then 35 cm was favored. This has lead to that most lines of cluster crastrum are built of at least 20 "sausages". They are also to long to be eaten by the gilltail and the dark giant shovelhead. The only creature still able to eat the cluster crastrum is the huge baleen tregon.

The cluster crastrums on the edge of the "sausage line" keep evolving new sausages all the time, making the line grow steadily. However, the longer the "sausage line" gets, the bigger is the chance that they break at some joint between two sausages. This is natural and is how they parts into new lines and this is therefor a part of their reproduction.
