Ancestor:Descendants:

The crystal brambley split from its ancestor, the grovecrystal. To maximize surface area for photosynthesis they have grown fractalized branches, making the organism more like a large shrub. Smaller, more numerous and more slender "crystals" get stuck to passing creatures. This spreads the flora further than budding, which it still does as well. The prickly nature of the crystal brambley makes it a good shelter for small fauna.
