The dwarf snorkelcrest split from its ancestor, the snorkelcrest. It is much like its ancestor, only smaller. It eats only the umbrellapuff now. It spend more time on land because its food source grows on land. Like its ancestor its crest has a hollow chamber in which it can store air when swimming underwater. Its hanging sail membrane on its crest and neck are sensitive to sound. They can "hear" the vibrations of sound and can make out loud noises.Their crests can make honks and hoots which are loud enough to communicate which each others poor hearing.
They still can change their head and neck colors to communicate. Their eyes have protective eye lids which they close when sticking their head in the water. Thus they cannot communicate when fully submerged. Different colors mean different feelings, such as red being aggressive.
They are docile creatures who live in herds of 10 to 16 members. They give birth 1-2 offspring every 2 years. And lay their eggs on the river banks in sandy nests. Mothers will sit on the nests until that hatch while the fathers will bring food to the mother. Once they hatch the mother will take over bring them food until their are big enough to join the rest of the herd. They have an average lifespan of 30 years.
