The fermi chitjorn split from its ancestor, the chitjorns. Due to island gigantism it has grown to 10 times its ancestors size. Not only is its exoskeleton made of chitin strong but also lightweight. It forms a mesh-like trunk with many shallow holes which have clusters of photosynthetic cells inside. This helps keep it out of each of most herbivores, but still allows for sunlight to entire the holes. Like their ancestors they grow well in low nutrient soils and can withstand droughts and extreme temperature change.
