The the fermi sunstalk split from its ancestor, the sunstalks. Due to island gigantism it reached it reach a maximum height of 1 meter tall. Most of its height is in its huge spore chamber in which it will generate huge amounts of spores which cover the whole island of Fermi. It is darker due to the polar environments it lives in. It must absorb as much sunlight as it can during the summer months.
The energy is then stored in its huge roots so it can stay dormant in the winter. It can lay dormant under the snow for a decade or more. Once exposed again it will regrow its black photosynthetic parts and generate more spores to spread again. During this time an orange haze of spores will cover the island.
