Ancestor:Descendants:

The ghastrett came about when several geistrat families came across the Huggs Temperate Forest, where they chose to settle down. All surviving members of these original pilgrims have evolved into this new species, causing a split from their ancestors.

Here, they have become mostly carnivorous, eating flora now to supplement their main diet of meat. However, they have evolved a unique strategy for catching their prey. Ghastretts only hunt scavengers, and have developed their camouflage perfectly to do so. Their skin remains mostly white, although the color is more sickly than before, and the black splotches of its ancestor have faded to drab shades of black in an attempt to mimic rotting organs. When hunting prey, they will now use their inflatable lungs to make themselves appear bloated, and will also utilize a scent organ located at the base of the posterior ventilation shaft/butt-nostril, which releases an odor very similar to rotting meat. They will then arc their bodies in a pose that makes their skin appear to be tightening over their flesh and moving their bodies through decomposition, and will stiffen their legs out as if stricken with rigormortis. Then, they will wait, and listen with their enlarged ears.

When a scavenger happens upon the gruesome scene, the clever ghastrett will continue to play dead until their target has come within range, and finally their final adaptation comes into play - a pair of sinister, razor-sharp killing claws that extend from the middle toe of their hind legs. This is stabbed into whatever area the ghastrett can reach - preferably a vital organ - where it can then proceed to finish the very surprised prey off. Dartirs are typically snatched out of the air, but may be ignored if a larger scavenger has noticed the "meal", leading to some ghastretts having small wounds in their bodies from dartir tails.

The cry of its ancestors has become altered slightly, and while the ghastrett can continue to use this call, it is distinguishable from the geistrat's. This is still used to try to frightened potential predators away, but is also utilized by females during mating season. It is the females who "battle" each other for the chance to mate with a male, which is done by inflating the lungs; the female who appears largest wins.

Often times, ghastretts can be found drinking water from beribarbos ponds.
