The gnarbolonk replaced its ancestor in the colder regions of Dixon, spreading into the alpine heights. It has become all but completely subterranean: its eyesight is very poor, and its leaves have completely atrophied. At the same time, its whiskers have multiplied and lengthened to help them feel around in their networks of tunnels. It uses its front limbs and sturdy beak to dig expansive lines of tunnels through all but the hardest soils. Its ears are higher up on its body: while digging its ears are pressed close to the tunnel's roof, letting it hear vibrations from far away. In this way it can communicate over long distances by pressing its butt-nostril against the tunnel wall and honking. It still goes out to mate every full moon, which is the only time it is vulnerable to predation. Other than these changes, it is the same as its ancestor.
