Ancestor:Descendants:

When pagodapalms began to grow in the rainforest, they, like most other plants, joined the race to get the most sunlight. To win, their number of top leaves greatly increased and the highest umbrella-leaf grew huge, blocking the light for anything growing underneath it and stealing its water. The roots that once came up above ground to gather air have been lost due to the multitude of leaves now being able to 'breath' much more efficiently than the roots. They still maintain a pollen that is released on to the small umbrella-like leaves as well as the ability to snag any stickystalk seeds off of passing animals. A freak mutation of luminosity has benefited the tree in allowing it to be much more apparent to creatures and attracting them to it to get off the stickystalk seeds and pollinate it. The glowing slime, that was once only poison, is only excreted when the lamp-palm needs to reproduce and is releasing pollen.
