The marine bubbleweed split from its ancestor river bubbleweed. It has moved back to the sea to fill the open niche that many other bubbleweed species have filled in the past. It has not changed much compared to its ancestor. Like its ancestor, it still has hydrogen-filled seed bubbles. These bubbles also keep the leaves upright and buoyant in the water. When its bubbles fall off they actually float up and out of the water into the air before landing back into the water. They asexually reproduce these "bubble seeds".
