Ancestor:Descendants:

The minibean has split from its ancestor and has undergone a unique transformation. Ancient genes for the strainbean form have become reactivated in this, causing it to resemble it in form, save for such traits as a tiny, nearly functionless mouth that only drags in water and the ability to absorb nutrients directly through its skin. Its populations have boomed throughout the nearly barren sea where it now thrives.

Growth is rapid and their lifespans are short, yet each individual is capable of spawning dozens upon dozens of larvae at weekly intervals. They form swarms containing trillions of individuals that float lazily in the sunlight waters, their "bizarre" shapes helping them to prevent sinking. They are capable of limited swimming, and only do so in order to reestablish themselves in the water column.

Along the coasts and other regions where planktonivores are present, their numbers are kept in line while at the same time boosting the populations of their predators.
