Due to the result of several mutations in their DNA, several primary young of the charybdis became capable of breeding on their own without needing to mature into adults. With the other stages of their life cycle no longer necessary due to this case of neoteny, the nerius was the ultimate result. Extremely small planktonivores, they exist to fill a role akin to zooplankton, grazing on the various phytoplankton that exist along the warm waters of the coast such as microswarmers and the like. They are in turn prey for much larger planktonivores, as well as the young of numerous oceanic species. With all these dangers, many do not live to reach the old age, though those that do can live for roughly 6 months.
