The polar spiral swimmer split from its ancestor and moved into the sea. It will still form spiral colonies however because large sources of methane are few and far between the older cells in the center of the colony will break off into individual swimmer cells that will go their own way looking for a new source to grow on and start their own colony. The swimmer cell navigates using a chemo-sensitive protrusion that it grows when it matures.
