The smoothcoat replaced its ancestor, the shaggycoat on Coolsteph Island. Not needing such a shaggy coat in the hot desert it now has a much thinner coat. Its legs no longer have its cotton-like coat anymore. Wit competition over the Thorny Hedgelog by other herbivores it changed it diet a bit and expanded it to sunstalks. In addition they sometimes even eat fuzzweed berries as a sweet treat. They have adapted claws on their feet to help them grip the ground better when running.
Like their ancestors they are found in group ranging from 4 to 12. The smallest groups include a male and a female and two children. Larger groups tend to consist of three pairs and 6 children. During mating season, females will butt heads over males to show their strength, which is a main factor in choosing a mate for life. Males with longer head spikes are more attractive to the females. The gestation period for females last for 5 months, whilst it takes 2 years for a child to mature to an adult. The lifespan of males is around 9 years whereas females can survive for 10–12 years depending on how healthy they are.
