The spikeyball shrub replaced the stickyball-crown shrub. It is much like its ancestor where it is a collection of small balls that produce a bad tasting chemical. It evolved spikes to keep the rest of the herbivores without taste buds away. In the desert you can't afford to lose water thus the more chemical they made the more water they lost. Thus they only produce the chemical when being fed upon.
