The thick trunked quilbil split from its ancestor, the quilbil and specialized to life in the Chum Salt Flats. The trunk has evolved into a huge water reservoir allowing them to grow on the salt flats where water truly is scarce. To cope with the high salinity they also excrete salt through their stem. To reproduce they no longer rely on berries but pollen and airborne seeds, the "bud" in the top-center of the plant is where the seeds are produced.
