The thornshell split from its ancestor, the spikeshelled sandflora. It has adapted to colder climates and spread to both connecting polar beaches. Its "shell-leaves" are shorter but they help retain heat. They are much thicker both to keep out the cold as well as any herbivores that may want to eat them. They are immobile and thus have to spread by airborne spores.
