Ancestor:Descendants:

The twilight crystal split from its ancestor, the marine crystal. The empty niche of the twilight slope provides more detritus in exchange for less sunlight. The red fungi-like part has grown taller to process more and the crystals have become smaller and shorter with fewer photosynthetic cells and more pores to let in water/detritus. The crystals have become softer due to fewer photosynthetic cells, potentially making it an easier target herbivorous fauna.
