Ancestor:Descendants:

The cave volox replaced its ancestor, the glowsnapper. With all its relatives around to compete with it developed extreme neoteny. It now appears like a very large volox carpotesta luceremundare-like tadpole. They do not grow to the adult stage anymore, however they can still reproduce in this new form. Unlike its ancestor, the tadpoles just keep growing bigger and bigger. First feeding on cave plankton and then working up to larger prey. Basically it will eat any creature it can swallow.

Like their relatives, they can both change color and glow. While not social, they do change colors to attract a mate or scare off predators. They have primitive gills inside their mouth with they use to breathe. They cannot breathe air anymore and must stay in the cave pools and water table. They lay frog-like eggs in the water. Many do not make it to adulthood since they and other predators will eat them.
