Ancestor:Descendants:

The flashing filtersquid replaced the filtersquid. It was a long time before the filtersquids got used to the flashing of the flash cells. When they did get used to them, they just dove into the clouds of flash cells floating in the water to feed on them. Later the filtersquids developed a sac on their back in which they store all the flash cells they eat. The flashing filtersquid is able to increase the pressure in this sac so that all the flash cells light up. This causes a very bright light which scares and confuses all of the predators trying to eat the flashing filtersquid. The flashing filtersquid still eats other small organisms in the water, but it also spend some time during the day recharging the flash cells by floating on the surface so the flash cells can use their photosynthesis.
